Article 181 of Law No. 2015-08 of 8 December 2015 on the Children's Code in the Republic of Benin prohibits all practices that may lead to early or forced marriage of children. The said practices, which are often coercive measures, psychological pressure, emotional blackmail, intense social and family pressure, are prohibited by this law. Article 18 of this law states, among other things, that the rights of the child must be respected and protected by parents and any other person exercising parental authority, and that the child must be protected against all forms of abuse, exploitation and violence and against harmful traditional practices.
