In the five years leading to the November 2013 Universal Periodic Review report, 207,416 female genital mutilation/ cutting (FGM/C) related disputes were brought to the courts. One such court case is a complaint filed in Southern Zone regional court involving a priest who opposed the law prohibiting FGM/C. He was sued by the regional office of the National Union of Eritrean Women (NUEW). He was found and penalized. Overall, 155 perpetrators were penalized across the country.
