The Government of Eritrea implemented various economic empowerment programs including micro loan programs. Beneficiaries of these programs are women who are internally displaced, demobilized fighters, and heads of their households. In 2013, approximately 15,591 women were awarded a collective amount of 103,335,640:00 Nakfa (690,000 USD) with start-up credit for small businesses such as mini-shops, household poultry, farming and vegetable gardening. Participation in the program increased about 50 percent since 2008.
