Brief Description

The island’s first ever Family Court was established in 1997, following the passing of the 1994 Family Court Act. A distinctive feature of the Family Court is its Social Support function, which allows for some balance and comprehensiveness in the services of the Court. There is a judicious mix of social and therapeutic techniques with legal services and interventions. The Family Court amounts to a specialized agency which offers redress for persons whose rights have been violated. The legal jurisdiction of the agency is as follows:
- Child Maintenance
- Spouse Maintenance
- Domestic Violence
- Attachment of Earnings
- Juvenile (care and protection and juvenile offences)
- Access and Visitation
- Mediation
