Law Number 23 of 2004 regarding Elimination of Household Violence was passed on 8 December 2004. The Law consists of 56 articles and specifies the definition of violence. It is intended to promote human rights, to achieve gender equality, to eliminate discrimination and to protect victims of violence, to punish perpetrators and to maintain the harmony of the household. The Law also highlights the roles of government, community, the need for protection and rehabilitation for victims and it also provides for sanctions to be imposed on perpetrators.
