In the period 2008-2010, the Gender Studies Centre at the University of Sana‘a and the Women's Studies and Research Centre at the University of Aden conducted a quantitative and qualitative study of gender-based violence in cooperation with the United Nations Population Fund and with funding from the Government of Germany. The study was part of a project to combat such violence.
The study sought to establish a database of cases of gender-based violence in Yemeni society, to identify and analyse the types and causes of such violence, and to shed light on institutional aspects of the problem.
The broader scope of the study extended to the entire country, but the fieldwork included six governorates and the Capital District.
