The Third National Strategy on Gender Equality (NSGE) and its Action Plan focused on (i) economic empowerment of women and men, (ii) guaranteeing participation as well as factual and equal engagement of women in political and public decision-making, (iii) reduction of gender-based violence and domestic violence, and (iv) strengthening the coordinating and monitoring role of the national gender equality mechanism, as well as awareness-raising of the society for the advancement of gender equality. This Strategy was formulated in accordance with the pillars of the Istanbul Convention, as reflected in the specific objectives of (i) raising awareness of society to refuse and to not tolerate the practice of gender-based violence and domestic violence, (ii) strengthening of referral mechanisms as well as the addition / improvement of specialized support services for the protection and treatment of cases of gender-based violence and domestic violence, and (iii) punishment of perpetrators and provision of rehabilitation opportunities through specialized programs.
