More rigorous legal action can be taken for violence against women and the girl-child since the Second Protection Against Violence Act was adopted in 2009. These amendments include the introduction of persistent perpetration of violence as an offence, the introduction of minimum punishment levels in cases of sexual abuse of a defenceless or mentally impaired person, or a person under the age of 14, as well as the definition of a new criminal offence regarding the establishment of sexual contact with a person under the age of 14.
