The Centre for Gender Equality is a national bureau in charge of administering the Act on the Equal Status and Equal Rights of Women and Men No. 10/2008. The Center also provides counseling and education in the field of gender equality for the government and municipal authorities, institutions, companies, individuals and non-governmental organizations.
The Centre was established in 2000, when a new gender equality law was passed by the Icelandic Parliament. Previously, there was an Equal Opportunities Office located in the capital, Reykjavík. The current equality law was passed by the Icelandic Parliament in 2008.
