Switzerland signed the Convention on Preventing and Combating Violence against Women and Domestic Violence (Istanbul Convention) on 11 September 2013. The text was then put out to consultation in the cantons, with political parties and interested organisations from 7 October 2015 to 29 January 2016. Of the 84 comments received, the vast majority were in favour of Switzerland's accession to the Istanbul Convention. The Federal Chambers voted in favour of accession on 16 June 2017. The Convention entered into force in Switzerland on 1 April 2018.
