There are many counselling and psychological services throughout Australian States and Territories. Some services are provided through telephone and online mediums as well as the traditional face to face counselling. Government, non-government charity and private enterprises all offer varying degrees of counselling and psychological services with prices varying, although many are free or subsidised by Medicare.
Medicare is Australia's universal health care system introduced in 1984 to provide eligible Australian residents with affordable, accessible and high-quality care. Medicare provides access to free treatment as a public patient in a public hospital and free or subsidised treatment by medical practitioners including general practitioners, specialists, participating optometrists or dentists. Many non-government entities also provide health services for victims of sexual assault or domestic and family violence.
